Oakland Housing Authority Lawsuit & Settlement
City of Oakland, Oakland Housing Authority settle lawsuit over public housing conditions |
A settlement signed December 10, 2008 by the City of Oakland and the Oakland Housing Authority (OHA) sets up improved systems for reporting, tracking and fixing maintenance problems for the thousands of tenants living in Oakland's federally funded public housing units.
The settlement ends a public nuisance lawsuit filed by the city in February 2007 over conditions at properties owned and managed by OHA, which is an independent public agency and Oakland's largest landlord. The signing ceremony took place at a rehabilitated OHA property on 28th Street. more info

City Attorney John Russo and OHA Executive Director Jon Gresley sign a settlement that includes clear policies for reporting and tracking maintenance problems. |

At the time of the lawsuit, more than 1,600 OHA apartment units were located at hundreds of "scattered sites" throughout the city that did not have on-site managers. Lack of management helped to create a condition of unabated criminal activity at some sites, and lack of maintainance led to numerous housing code violations, unsafe living spaces, accumulation of garbage and other problems.
