On September 15, one of the 15 individuals covered by the North Oakland gang injunction was arrested after he led police on a high speed chase and was caught with a stolen handgun. Video report about the city's legal battle with two of the "Riders," former cops accused of beating suspects, planting evidence and engaging in other misconduct.
"Before you spray millions of people in their homes and communities, make sure you know what it is you are doing. The government saying 'trust us, it's safe' is not going to get it done."
"It's not simply the family whose dreams are being extinguished, who are losing equity, who are losing their home. It's also that when one of these homes is foreclosed ... you're looking at an impact to the very fabric of that block."
The City of Oakland sued the Oakland Housing Authority in 2007 over unsafe living conditions and a lack of basic repairs. In December 2008 the two agencies agreed to a settlement that includes new systems for reporting, tracking and fixing maintenance problems.
The East Bay Municipal Utility District has yet to take responsibility for leaks in its Central Reservoir or damage to homes and streets caused by landslides in the area. Citing national security, EBMUD has refused to disclose information about the leaks.
